Something I saw brought up on another board is that this could be an attempt to create a similar reaction in people to when they find out that someone they have known for years is gay. Especially if they didn't suspect it at all.

Its lke protesting smoking by burning the smokes on the fire. Besides it leaked because teh director of the movie wanted a scene where dumbeldore was interested in a woman.

Rowling had to step in and tell the director that dumbeldore was gay so that couldent happend.

Maybe if Rurik was gay and his marriage to Althea would have been a total sham designed to hide his orientation from the other Ascalonians.
